In the first of our new regular feature, Leah opens up her diary for a look at what a last week held for #TeamAppointedd and what we’ve got to look forward to this coming week...
Running your own business is often referred to as a roller coaster journey with lots of ups and downs. That is so true, and the variety of our jobs can often be seen clearly in our diary, whether it’s back to back appointments or a week of working with your team on more strategic development.
There seems to be no better time for starting our new #MyAppointeddDiary feature than at the end of a very busy Global Entrepreneurship Week. While some weeks at Appointedd we are all chained to our desks, pushing new features or focusing on customer service, there are a few weeks of the year when our feet don’t seem to touch the ground! This week was one of them, and I have spent it zipping here, there and everywhere, chatting to small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs across the country. One of my favourite things to do, so I’m definitely not complaining!

An early start today as I’m away down to Birmingham to speak at the launch of the Entrepreneurial Spark #PitchUp series of events. I don’t even mind when the alarm wakes me at 5am as I’m excited to be speaking at the event with the wonderful Levi Roots of Reggae Reggae Sauce/Dragons’ Den fame!
The flight down to Birmingham is mercifully short, if a bit bumpy, and I am soon hugging hellos with the Entrepreneurial Spark team and Levi Roots himself (who is LOVELY btw!).
#PitchUp has been organised to attract entrepreneurs and small business owners to apply for ESpark, the fantastic business incubator that Appointedd was supported by. Levi Roots is opening the event and I’m there to give the businesses an idea of what to expect from ESpark. It’s amazing to see Levi perform the famous Reggae Reggae Sauce song live and inspiring to hear his journey from learning his grandma’s recipe to becoming the UK’s biggest selling sauce (even overtaking Heinz Ketchup!). But the highlight of the day for me is meeting some of the companies applying for Entrepreneurial Spark - an ambitious and inspiring bunch indeed! A special mention should go to the fabulous Fay from Hair Hostess - an inspirational entrepreneur in the hair and beauty industry. Watch this space for her!

Back up in Edinburgh today and off to sit on a panel at the Startup Summit event. Another Global Entrepreneurship Week event, #SUS14 was held at the impressive Global Headquarters of RBS and attracted hundreds of ambitious small businesses.
I was super honoured to be asked to sit on the panel offering advice to startups who are looking to raise investment - it only seems like yesterday that we were pitching to raise investment so I really understand the trials and tribulations!
Startup Summit is an annual event run by the fantastic startup, We Are The Future, and so it really captures everything that someone wanting to start their own business needs to know. If you didn’t make it this year, pop it in your diary for next year…
Wednesday 19th Nov
It’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Day! Today I’m very honoured to be meeting Angela Constance MSP. The meeting is to celebrate #WED and to announce the results of the recent survey of Women Owned Business in Scotland produced by Women’s Enterprise Scotland. It also coincides with the announcement about the new Women's Enterprise Scotland Ambassadors, of which I am one! I am so proud to have been chosen as one of five ambassadors taken on to raise awareness of the opportunities open to women when it comes to running their own business.
It was great meeting Angela Constance - it was so nice to be able to chat to her about business, the changes afoot in Government and the conversation even wandered to the gorgeous pair of red shoes she was wearing! Well, it doesn’t all have to be business-related chat…
Today is also my husband’s birthday. Thankfully I remembered to buy a card and present so I am managing to keep up the pretence of being a dutiful wife ;-) I’m hugely lucky, my husband is very supportive of me and the business so he understands when sometimes Appointedd has to come first.
We won’t really celebrate too much as we are going to Amsterdam in a few weeks to celebrate both of our birthdays. Running my own business allows me to flexibly manage my schedule and I try to make the most of the opportunities this affords me. I’ll be working through the weekend for the next two weekends to make sure I can take the time off, and I’ll probably end up working from Amsterdam some of the time, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. For me, being flexible as to how, when and where I work is one of the best things about running my own business and because I love my job, I’m happy to be working while away anyway!
Thursday 20th Nov
Today is an office day for me - it’s nice to get to catch up on admin and see the team. Our newest recruit, Business Development Assistant, Clare, is out seeing a client and getting them set up on our software. We have been working on some great new features for customers and it’s great to be able to roll them out across lots of different types of businesses. We now have the largest selection of different businesses using our online booking tools and business management software, from photographers to salons, physiotherapists to pharmacies, and I am so proud that we have been able to build really powerful software that adds value to so many different types of businesses.
Friday 21st Nov
Another office day but this one starts with bacon rolls! We have a tradition at Appointedd that Fridays start with breakfast as a team and end, whenever possible, with team drinks. I love it when the whole team is together in the office as we are able to all work together and collaborate to make sure we are all on the same page. A fab way to end the week and start the planning for next week, highlights of which include…
Sitting on the panel for the Women in Technology Conference with one of my heroes, Heidi Roizen. I’m nervous I’m going to be totally outclassed on this panel but so honoured to have been asked! The event is organised by Harvey Nash, Girl Geek Scotland, and Scotland Silicon Valley Link and the panel will be discussing the findings of the recent Women in Technology Survey - I’ll post an update here after it, so watch this space!
Have a great week all and feel free to update us on what you’re up to on Twitter using the #MyAppointeddDiary hashtag.
Ps... If you want to try using Appointedd to manage your diary (complete with online bookings!) you can sign up for 30 days free here!

Phew! What a week for the hair and beauty industry! Whether you think it's the best gossip ever or you're embarrassed by the whole thing, the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards have got the salon industry abuzz.
If you have been hearing the term “Heart Bleed” everywhere, you don’t need to be calling your local doctor and checking out your health. Fortunately, this bug is not health related. Not so fortunately, however, you may need to health check your website and change a few passwords. But, no fear, Appointedd’s got your back.
Stumbled upon this fab infographic from our lovely friends at Smarta. Check out the hows, whys and wherefores of starting your own business. And if you were one of the record breaking half million people who started their own business in 2013, check out Appointedd to see whether we can help revolutionise they way you run your business...
New year, new start… You’ve heard it all before. Let’s be honest, you’re probably still spouting it. I know I am. But, really, what does it all mean? If we were going to make real changes in our life, why wait until an arbitrary date to do so?
Have a fabulous Christmas and a very merry Hogmanay...
