Today I’m running through how to make your own earrings, though many of these techniques can be used for other kinds of jewellery also.

I am a huge fan of jewellery – it can truly transform an outfit. Layer necklaces over a plain tank top; pile up bracelets of different shapes and sizes on bare arms; jazz up a simple black dress with statement earrings. This summer, statement jewellery is everywhere in every colour imaginable. But if you want to be original, designing your own adornments is easier than you think! Give it a go and you will be hooked. Stand back and wait for all of those ‘Ooooh where did you get that?’ questions to which you can nonchalantly respond with ‘I made it myself.’

These earrings are very chic and are so simple to make – you can have them in every colour! You can keep the palette neutral and monochrome (very Chanel) or go wild with bright pops of colour for summer.

So what are you waiting for – let’s get started!

You will need (all easy to find on eBay at a very low cost):

  • 2 earring hooks (two versions are shown below – choose one)
  • 2  pin head jewellery posts
  • Your choice of beads or pearls (pre-drilled)
  • 2 pre-made bows (or make your own with ribbon)
  • Metal cutters (or strong scissors)
  • Jewellery making pliers (pick these up from eBay for around £2)

STEP 1

Thread the beads or pearls that you want at the bottom of your earrings onto the jewellery post.

STEP 2

Thread the bow through the jewellery post to sit above the pearls.

STEP 3

Using the metal cutters, remove any excess from your jewellery post – you want to keep around a thumb’s width (or 2.5 cm).

STEP 4

Using the pliers, you want to create an eye hole to attach the earring hook. To do this you need to:

  1. Bend the top of the post toward you with the pliers

  2. Position the pliers at the top of the post and gently pull it away from you, round and downwards until you are beginning to see a circle shape at the top of the post.

  3. This is the fiddly bit! Continue to work with the pliers until you close the circle as tightly as you can. It should look something like the picture below. This takes a little practice but soon it won’t take more than a few seconds.

STEP 5

Finally, attach the earring hook. If your chosen hook has an ‘eye’, use the pliers to gently pull it open to create a space large enough to slip your earring dangle onto, then close it again.

Go through the whole process with the other earring and you will be the proud owner of DIY earrings that look chic and original!
